Caregivers, This One's For You 💕 Your Survival Guide is Inside

Reader

This message is for caregivers in any capacity. When you care for another human, you are a special person, indeed.

Caregiver, it’s time to turn your care and attention back to YOU.

I see you and all you do and the toll it takes on you. I get it because I’ve been there.

After years of caring for my mother with Alzheimer's, while simultaneously managing two young children, I learned a critical lesson: Caregivers need care too. NEED. Not want. Not “should have eventually”. It’s not optional. It’s essential. And we must talk about this because it’s a topic all too ignored.

The statistics are stark:

  • Caregiving has become a chronic stress model in studies because it’s so consistently stressful.
  • There are higher rates of depression and anxiety in caregivers, not surprisingly.
  • Caregivers have increased risk of physical health complications and there’s a huge impact psychologically.

Here's the truth I want every caregiver to understand: Your well-being is NOT a luxury. It's a necessity.

If you agree, the next question is HOW, right? I understand time is precious and it can be so difficult to prioritize your own care, but there are things that will help. Consider these 7 strategies your survival guide.

7 Quick Self-care Strategies for Caregivers

  1. Take short breaks (even 10 minutes counts!)
  2. Accept help when offered
  3. Prioritize sleep
  4. Nourish your body
  5. Stay connected
  6. Set boundaries
  7. Keep doing what brings you joy

This checklist is simple and straightforward and there is more to the "how" that isn't listened. I expound on each in this week’s podcast episode. Be sure to listen and share it with the caregivers and those caring for the caregivers! And if you prefer reading, check out the blog post.

Do you know what brings you joy?

The last one on the list is different from the others and possibly the most open to interpretation. Knowing what brings you joy is so important, because that allows you to prioritize it. The Joy List workbook (part of the Productivity Toolkit) is key to figuring that out. Be sure to download it and use it if you haven't already. You can find it HERE.

As someone who's walked this challenging path, I know how isolating caregiving can feel. But you are not alone. You are incredible. And you deserve support.

After a Quickstart session (you can listen in on here) my client said: "I have struggled at times with coaching in the past because the suggestions sometimes are just not aligned with my life or things I can do or things that feel real. I feel like you've kind of given me a whole bunch of tools that I can try according to my bandwidth, which actually feels like a relief as opposed to another set of things to do!"

Reader Ever feel like traditional productivity advice just doesn't click with you? I hear that from clients constantly and the reason is simple: One-size-fits-all solutions are a myth. What makes you you is what will help you find your most effective productivity path, and your unique personality is one of those aspects. Knowing your personality and working with it is the real secret weapon to working smarter, not harder. This is why I do assessments first with my clients. When I coach you, I...

Reader Last week I asked you if you could magically fix one thing to be more productive, which of the following would it be: 1) figuring out what you need to do, 2) scheduling and fitting it all in, 3) developing the systems to track it all, or 4) getting yourself to take action. The results are in across multiple platforms and... ::Drumroll Please:: It was a TIE between #2 Scheduling it to fit it all in, and #4 Getting yourself to take action and do the stuff on the list! What does this...

Reader This month, I want to talk about something we often misunderstand: PRIDE. Yes, I mean that kind of pride. I am a rainbow-wearing, Free Mom Hug card-carrying safe space and any time we can elevate humans and prioritize love, it’s a good day. I also mean the simple concept of pride in terms of how we feel about ourselves. Because I have found it to be decidedly misunderstood, no matter the context. The pride I mean is not a boastful thing. It’s a powerful, self-accepting belief in your...
