How to work with your brain, not against it...

Reader

Have you ever tried a productivity tip that “works for everyone”…and felt absolutely deflated when it did not work for you?

When you feel overwhelmed, it is tempting to look for a new solution: a new system, a new planner, a new routine, a new push of willpower. But if the way you are trying to be productive is not aligned with who you are, no amount of forcing it will feel sustainable.

That is why self-awareness is still my number one productivity tool, and why I lean so heavily on self-discovery tools with my clients. But to be clear, those tools aren't meant to label you, box you in, or judge you. They are how you create filters you can use to choose habits, techniques, and supports that actually fit you.

If you want to make productivity feel easier and more sustainable, you'll want to:

  1. Notice what consistently drains you and what consistently energizes you.
  2. Pay attention to how you respond to expectations and accountability.
  3. Lead with strengths, not self-criticism.
  4. Turn insight into one small adjustment.

Where do you start? The Assessments Workbook inside the free Positively Productive Toolkit walks you through a starter set of assessments I recommend and use with my clients. And I walk you through the top four assessments in this week's podcast episode if you'd like to learn more.

You know, I've always loved taking assessments. And while the ones that tell you what kind of potato chip you might be might only be for fun (Buzzfeed saw me coming) there is a lot we can do with the information we gather about ourselves. Stay curious and remember that what you learn is the first step toward sustainable, shame-free productivity.

Reader You've probably spent a lot of time managing your time. Tracking it, scheduling it, protecting it. And that makes sense — time is finite and visible and easy to measure. But here's something worth considering: two people can have identical schedules and get completely different results. Same hours, same tasks, totally different output. If time were the only variable, that wouldn't be possible. The missing piece is energy. Energy management is the practice of paying attention to your...

Reader Last week we talked about decluttering your inbox: clearing out the accumulation and reducing the weight of it. This week we're taking the next step: building a system so your inbox actually works for you going forward. (If you haven't decluttered your inbox yet, no worries. The tools we're covering today have standalone value. In fact, some of them will help reduce incoming clutter on their own.) Your inbox is a communication tool. It's not a to-do list, a filing cabinet, or a measure...

Reader Does your inbox fill you with dread? You open it and immediately feel behind, overwhelmed, or just vaguely anxious — even when nothing urgent is waiting for you. That feeling is real, and it has a name: digital mental load. Research on cognitive load suggests that cluttered digital environments create background stress even when you're not actively engaging with them. Your brain registers the accumulation and quietly tracks it as unfinished business. It's not a discipline problem. It's...
