Reclaim Your Space with my SIMPLE Decluttering System

Reader

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the clutter in your life? I get it. Even with years of experience as a professional organizer, I’m still fighting the good fight in my home thanks to kids and cats...but at least my office is doing alright! (Curious? Here are pix.)

It’s natural for clutter to be a challenge. We get busy. We collect stuff. We get overwhelmed. It happens to all of us, including me. The good news is, I know how to fix it in a way that’s straightforward and sustainable.

I’m excited to share something I've used to help countless clients take back control of their spaces. It's called the SIMPLE system, and it's a personalized, 6-step approach to decluttering. Unlike generic decluttering advice, this SIMPLE approach helps you customize your own approach, honoring your specific needs and lifestyle and you’ll be able to tackle the clutter in a way that will last.

In my latest podcast episode I review the system in detail, sharing the 6 steps and offering real-life examples. In my previous email we chatted about ways to make your home office more productive, and since then I’ve also aired an episode on digital clutter. What’s especially effective about the SIMPLE System is that it can apply to any of these types of clutter.

The acronym SIMPLE helps you remember the steps to create your own decluttering framework.

Here are the 6 steps:

  1. S - Set yourself up for success by planning your project and gathering the right tools.
  2. I - Identify the true purpose of the space you want to declutter. (This will help you decide what belongs and what doesn’t.)
  3. M - Match like items together to get a full picture of what you have so you make more effective decisions.
  4. P - Pare down, only keeping what aligns with your space's purpose.
  5. L - Limit what you keep based on the size of your space and your personal clutter tolerance. (This may mean being more ruthless with the paring.)
  6. E - Evaluate your progress and put systems in place to prevent clutter from creeping back in.

The result? A decluttered, organized environment that supports how you actually want to live and work. No more feeling overwhelmed, distracted, or unproductive because of the stuff taking over your life.

If you're ready to finally get a handle on the clutter, I encourage you to listen to the full episode and to check out the On-Demand Whole-life Decluttering Workshop (details below). You'll walk away with a clear action plan to make space for what truly matters.

As I write this, we’ve been celebrating the Lunar New Year. One of the ways many celebrate this time is by cleaning and decluttering to make space for the good fortune ahead. I wish good fortune and opportunity for you, and I’d love to know what you’d like to make space for in the coming months.

Here's to making space for what matters to you.

Reader We hear about self-care all the time… but usually in the form of spa days, bubble baths, or vacations you have to “earn.” And while those are lovely, they’re not the kind of self-care that keeps you grounded and supported in everyday life. Here’s the truth I wish more people understood and believed: Self-care isn’t indulgence. It’s maintenance for your mind, body, and energy. One of the simplest ways to practice restorative self-care is by creating something I call a Joy List, a...

Reader Have you ever noticed that some routines or systems look helpful on paper, but are surprisingly hard to stick with in real life? You may start strong, push for a while, and then quietly drift away from them. It’s easy to assume that means you lack discipline or motivation. But very often, it isn’t a motivation problem at all. It’s a values alignment problem. Your core values are the deeply held beliefs that guide what matters most to you. They shape how you make decisions, how you...
