Reclaim Your Space with my SIMPLE Decluttering System

Reader

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the clutter in your life? I get it. Even with years of experience as a professional organizer, I’m still fighting the good fight in my home thanks to kids and cats...but at least my office is doing alright! (Curious? Here are pix.)

It’s natural for clutter to be a challenge. We get busy. We collect stuff. We get overwhelmed. It happens to all of us, including me. The good news is, I know how to fix it in a way that’s straightforward and sustainable.

I’m excited to share something I've used to help countless clients take back control of their spaces. It's called the SIMPLE system, and it's a personalized, 6-step approach to decluttering. Unlike generic decluttering advice, this SIMPLE approach helps you customize your own approach, honoring your specific needs and lifestyle and you’ll be able to tackle the clutter in a way that will last.

In my latest podcast episode I review the system in detail, sharing the 6 steps and offering real-life examples. In my previous email we chatted about ways to make your home office more productive, and since then I’ve also aired an episode on digital clutter. What’s especially effective about the SIMPLE System is that it can apply to any of these types of clutter.

The acronym SIMPLE helps you remember the steps to create your own decluttering framework.

Here are the 6 steps:

  1. S - Set yourself up for success by planning your project and gathering the right tools.
  2. I - Identify the true purpose of the space you want to declutter. (This will help you decide what belongs and what doesn’t.)
  3. M - Match like items together to get a full picture of what you have so you make more effective decisions.
  4. P - Pare down, only keeping what aligns with your space's purpose.
  5. L - Limit what you keep based on the size of your space and your personal clutter tolerance. (This may mean being more ruthless with the paring.)
  6. E - Evaluate your progress and put systems in place to prevent clutter from creeping back in.

The result? A decluttered, organized environment that supports how you actually want to live and work. No more feeling overwhelmed, distracted, or unproductive because of the stuff taking over your life.

If you're ready to finally get a handle on the clutter, I encourage you to listen to the full episode and to check out the On-Demand Whole-life Decluttering Workshop (details below). You'll walk away with a clear action plan to make space for what truly matters.

As I write this, we’ve been celebrating the Lunar New Year. One of the ways many celebrate this time is by cleaning and decluttering to make space for the good fortune ahead. I wish good fortune and opportunity for you, and I’d love to know what you’d like to make space for in the coming months.

Here's to making space for what matters to you.

I help overwhelmed clients ditch hustle culture and design shame-free, personalized systems that lead to sustainable success—without burnout or sacrificing what they love. For me, that means road-tripping with my husband and teens, making music with my family and friends, and inspiring others with my voice. One of my favorite ways to recharge is curling up with a book, an iced coffee, and a cat on my lap. ------------------------------------------- Check out the resources I offer below and request my Toolkit to reduce overwhelm, boost energy, and align your actions with your values!

Reader People ask me all the time how I keep so many things running — the podcast, coaching clients, a household, a family with its own chaos built in (as well as music gigs). The honest answer is that I don't do anything magic. I have a handful of approaches I rely on daily, and I've stuck with them because they actually work for how my brain operates. Today I want to share a few of them with you for inspiration. Feel free to take what works and leave the rest. Here are some approaches worth...

Reader Does your week need a course catalog? Not literally, but conceptually. Here's what I mean... When you were in school, you didn't wake up and wonder what to focus on first. The structure was handed to you: math, then English, lunch at 11:30, gym on alternating days. It wasn't glamorous, but it was clear. And that clarity removed a surprising amount of daily friction. Our schedules now rarely work that way. Instead, most of us operate from a rolling task list with no built-in rhythm —...

Reader You've set up the routines. You know what you're supposed to do and when. You show up, you go through the steps...and yet the habits you're trying to build keep slipping. The consistency you're looking for stays just out of reach. It's not that your routines are wrong. What's missing is meaning inside the structure you already have. The name for that is ritual. Routine and ritual aren't the same thing, even though we use the words interchangeably. A routine is the sequence of actions...
