This magical productivity combo will make your holidays happier!

Reader

In honor of a magical season, I have a magical productivity combination for you: the 80/20 principle and your holiday plans. Why? Because applying this technique to your choices will reduce your stress and make space to make merry.

The holiday season, while a time of joy and connection, is also one filled with stress. With the financial pressures, family dynamics, social obligations, and disruption of routines, many people find themselves feeling overwhelmed. How do we sidestep these stressors? With a leveraging technique known as 80/20 principle (also known as the Pareto principle).

The 80/20 principle states that for many outcomes, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. When applied to the holidays, this means focusing on the 20% of activities, traditions, and relationships that bring you 80% of the joy and meaning.

Consider these specific strategies to help you stress less this season:

  1. Holiday Shopping: Prioritize the 20% of people who are most important to give gifts to. Focus on fewer, more meaningful gifts rather than many small, inexpensive ones.
  2. Managing Expectations: Identify the 20% of holiday traditions that are truly essential to you. Let go of the rest and set realistic expectations.
  3. Simplifying Preparations: Delegate tasks, say no to excess commitments, and find ways to streamline your holiday to-do list.
  4. Decluttering: Clearing physical, mental, and gift-giving clutter can make the season much less stressful.

Would you like to learn more about the Pareto principle and how to apply it? There are two episodes of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast you’ll want to check out. In Episode 199 you’ll find a general introduction on how to apply this principle to your life and in Episode 236 I review the principle and how it can help you have happier holidays without the standard stress. (I include lots of examples of ways my family and I have applied this to our lives, which was especially important during times of caregiving and grief.)

I’m curious, what are your traditions for the holidays and what have you let go of to make the season less stressful? Any tips you would add?

Here's to saying yes to less stress and more joy,

Lisa

Reader Here we are mid-way through January (that happened fast!) and if you’re following the trends, then you are either decluttering or thinking about decluttering. I'm a fan of this trend not only because of what I coach, but because it’s one that makes sense after the downshift of the holiday season plus it fits with the freshness of the new year. We are ready to “get back to it” and to “make things happen” and our environment needs to be conducive to those goals. As a productivity coach...

Reader While this is the time of preparing for and attending holiday celebrations and finishing up work, I encourage you to carve out some time to appreciate this past year and prep for the next. The turning of the calendar lends itself to pausing and preparing. It’s not only a time to celebrate the holidays, but also to celebrate who we are and where we’re going. These four strategic and specific actions, done before the end of the year, can set you up for a successful and fulfilling new...

Reader As we approach the new year, you may be thinking about goals, resolutions, and how to make 2025 your best year yet. Or, if you're like me, you’re just trying to get through the holidays, and then you'll get serious soon enough about those plans, which may involve a scramble at year end. Both are valid approaches, though what isn't ideal is the belief that you must have detailed plans and resolutions for your year to be successful. I have a trick I’ve been using for over a decade that...
