Make Time Blocking Work for You by Making it Fun and Flexible

Reader

If you’ve ever tried time blocking and felt frustrated, or even resisted it completely because you feel like it just doesn’t work for you, read on...

I know personally how overwhelming it can be to manage a schedule when you’re already stretched thin. When I was caring for my mom and young kids, I remember feeling furious at advice that expected me to show up at the same time each day for the same thing when I couldn’t guarantee I would have the availability or the energy. My circumstances simply didn’t allow for that and I felt like all the productivity solutions ignored my life.

That’s why I created an approach I now call flex-blocking—a flexible, playful way to time block that actually works for real life. In this week’s episode of the Positively Living® Podcast, I walk you through how to make time blocking fun and functional, using strategies like:

  • Creating themed time blocks (with names that make you laugh and smile)
  • Using color coding to reflect energy and intention (for brightness and balance)
  • Building in margin and movement, not just meetings (buffer time is essential)
  • Designing your week for your unique brain (especially handy if you're a Rebel or Questioner)

I also revisit a recorded strategy session with Lauren Yee, where we explored “school-style” time blocking—and how she adapted it to fit her personality and needs. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked because it was hers. If you didn't catch that one, you may want to listen now (and be sure to check out the follow up episode as well).

If you're ready to design a shame-free, sustainable schedule you’ll actually enjoy following, this episode is your permission slip. Want to hear more? You can listen to the episode and check out the blog post.

With encouragement and a color-coded calendar,

Lisa

P.S. If a color coded flex-blocking calendar sounds like something you want, I encourage you to try it! And, if you want to get there faster, a coaching session will do it. Curious about that? Reply to this email and I'll let you know what your options are.

Hi Reader We usually think of productivity as a good thing, something to strive for and something to be proud of, and as a coach specializing in that, I agree! It often is just that. As with most things in life, however, there is a duality. Productivity can be supportive and freeing, but it can also turn into something that harms us. If you’ve ever felt like productivity was not working for you, or even made life harder, you are not imagining it. The truth is that productivity becomes...

Hi Reader If you're like me, you have the best of intentions when it comes to planning out self-care. You promise yourself you'll do things like journal, walk, or hydrate and you are so excited to start! But let me ask you this...have you made that self-care plan only to watch it fall apart as soon as life got busy? One urgent deadline, one bad night of sleep, and suddenly all those good intentions disappear along with any benefits the self-care had to offer. Ugh. The reason this happens is...

Hi Reader Ever had one of those days where the checklist is complete (we’ve read the emails, done the laundry, completed the errands, finished the projects) and yet, somehow, you still feel unsatisfied? Conversely, you may have had a day where not much gets done on paper (that poor checklist goes largely unchecked) yet you end it feeling fulfilled? (You don’t think you should but you can’t help it because what you did was meaningful to you.) What’s the difference? It comes down to two sides...
