Why Men's Mental Health Matters

Hi Reader

Have you ever noticed how many men you love seem to struggle in silence? They hold it together, power through, and push their feelings down, because that’s what they’re taught to do. But that kind of “strength” comes at a cost.

As a wife and mom of sons, I see it up close. And as a coach who’s now certified in Mental Health First Aid, I know how urgently we need to change the story we tell about what it means to be strong.

We’ve made incredible progress in the conversation around mental health, but when it comes to men, old patterns are creeping back in. “Be tough.” “Don’t cry.” “Figure it out yourself.” These messages keep too many people from getting the care they need. They hurt families, relationships, and communities in the process.

If you want to help shift that, here are a few ways to start:

  • Normalize the conversation. Talk about therapy, emotions, and mental health just as easily as you’d talk about a doctor’s visit.
  • Watch your language. The phrase “man up” is toxic and needs to be tossed out. Instead, let's making saying “I need help” the most common, accepted phrase. Words matter.
  • Model what you want to see. Share when you struggle and what support looks like for you. Vulnerability gives others permission to do the same.

These small actions make a big difference. They signal safety. They create belonging. They remind us that courage looks like connection, not isolation.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to listen to my conversation with Tim Beisiegel, a powerful reminder that asking for help is not weakness but one of the bravest things we can do.

You’ll also find resources in the show notes, including Episode 29 with Mallory Jackson on trauma-informed healing (and books she references) and the SAMHSA.gov link for free, confidential mental-health support 24/7.

Thank you for being part of this conversation. When we make space for men’s mental health, we make space for everyone’s healing.

It’s a scientifically proven habit that rewires your brain for joy....

When we first spoke, the world was still...
