Core values: The foundation of personalized productivity.

Reader

Have you ever noticed that some routines or systems look helpful on paper, but are surprisingly hard to stick with in real life? You may start strong, push for a while, and then quietly drift away from them.

It’s easy to assume that means you lack discipline or motivation. But very often, it isn’t a motivation problem at all. It’s a values alignment problem.

Your core values are the deeply held beliefs that guide what matters most to you. They shape how you make decisions, how you spend your time, what energizes you, and what quietly drains you. And when your systems don’t reflect those values, you feel resistance, guilt, second-guessing, or burnout… even when the system “should” work.

When you understand your values, you begin to see that the struggle wasn’t personal failure. It was misalignment.

And when you realign?
Your efforts feel grounding rather than draining. You spend less energy pushing yourself and more time taking meaningful action that actually feels right for you. Motivation becomes steadier because it is rooted in what you truly believe in.

Figuring out your core values is key to creating sustainable productivity systems, but where do you start?

Here are a few ways to consider your core values...

• Think about a time you felt proud, content, or truly fulfilled.
What value was being honored in that moment?

• Now think about a time you felt pressured, conflicted, or compromised.
Was something you care deeply about being pushed aside?

• Look at your current routines.
Do any of them unintentionally compete with what matters most to you?

• Ask yourself:
“Does the way I work match what I value in this season of life?”

If you’d like support walking through this reflection, my latest podcast episode takes you step-by-step through the Core Values Workbook inside the free Positively Productive Toolkit*, and helps you connect your values to the way you structure your time and energy.

Reader Let’s be honest: the start of a new year isn’t always the fresh, sparkly reset we’re told it should be. Sometimes it feels loud and rushed before we’ve even found our footing in the first week. We’re surrounded by messages about starting strong, setting big goals, and becoming a “new you”…and instead of feeling inspired, it can feel like pressure. If that sounds familiar, you are absolutely not alone. I’m inviting you to begin the year differently, in a way that prioritizes your...
