Did you know your body has a hidden stress management switch?

Reader

There is so much that affects our productivity, especially stress. It's why I studied to receive a stress management certification in 2020 (wild timing, huh?) We talked about ways to reduce stress response last week, but what if I told you there’s a nerve in your body that’s your ultimate stress-fighting ally?

In my latest podcast episode #257 I’m breaking down everything you need to know about the Vagus Nerve, a hidden stress-regulation system that you can strengthen and stimulate to help you through lifes ups and downs. This nerve travels through your body, connects to your gut, and is responsible for helping you shift between stress-response modes (fight-flight and rest-digest). When it’s functioning and strong, it can help you have better digestion and even an enhanced immune system! The reason so many stress management techniques I recommend work is because they stimulate this nerve.

Quick actionable tips

You can review the 10 tips I mentioned last week, but if you want to keep it really simple, here are three ways to stimulate the Vagus Nerve:

  1. Breathe Strategically: Inhale for 3 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds
  2. Sing or Hum (Any music, any key!)
  3. Listen to soothing sounds (music or a podcast or an audiobook)

If you’d like more details and personal examples, you can listen to the full episode. As the saying goes, you can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf. Stress will always be around, but what you do to manage it will help you live a better life. Here’s to doing less, living more, and breathing easier.

Reader As someone who's navigated overwhelm as an entrepreneur, caregiver, and mom, I've discovered that managing stress isn't about eliminating it completely—it's about building resilience and creating sustainable strategies. When we apply stress-reducing habits to our regular routine, they can make a world of difference. In episode 256 of the Positively Living Podcast, I share these simple (and fun) stress-reduction tips: 1️⃣ Get Moving: Exercise isn't about being an athlete; it's about...

Reader If you have a messy home you're exhausted trying to conquer, chances are it’s not just you who made it that way. I have heard from so many clients and friends that they could have an organized home if they lived alone! We often say things like this and laugh it off, but deep inside we're conflicted, so I wanted to get to the heart of the matter. We did so in last week’s podcast episode. I sat down with Crystal Nerpel, author of “Loving Your Home,” and we got very real about home...

Reader Despite the fact that the majority of productivity experts love talking about time management, I don’t. I think it’s a myth…a red herring if you will. The standard issue advice for being productive leads you in the wrong direction. "Manage your time so you can do more?" Nope. That’s a recipe for burnout. We need to stop focusing on the "do more" part. Instead, you want to do the right thing(s) at the right time the right way for YOU. That's true productivity. Ask yourself, what REALLY...
