Don't push past this productivity secret!

Reader

Do you feel like you constantly need to push forward to be productive? The truth is, non-stop work doesn't work. If that point sounds familiar to you, you'd be right and you've probably been here awhile. We talked recently about hustle culture and our need to push through. This relates to that.

Because we think we need to keep pushing, we have a tendency to push past the very things we need to be most productive, so today I’m reminding you about the "power of the pause".

Your brain needs breaks in order to solve complex problems, boost creativity, reduce stress, and improve focus. Science backs this up. We see the proof when we study the effects of chronic stress and sufficient sleep and a host of other topics that relate to pausing before pushing ahead.

But when you're rushing to meet deadlines, how can that work? I get it. I have a busy life and I know it’s hard not to keep going in the name of being productive, but consider the following options. Which would you choose?

constant hustle = burnout

OR

strategic breaks = peak performance

In my latest podcast episode, I’m breaking down why PAUSING is your secret weapon for productivity. My favorite 3 strategic pauses can be done in a only a few minutes (5 or 10 or whatever you have to spare):

  • Physical Movement (take a walk or stretch and get the blood flowing)
  • Mindful meditation mini-sessions (5 minute meditation with breathing reduces stress and resets vision)
  • Creative breaks (taking a few minutes to read or create is FUN - it can be a great reward when you do a Pomodoro sprint)

If you'd like more details on this topic, be sure to tune into episode 272 and/or check out the blog post.

When we talk about working smarter, not harder, that includes pausing to make sure you get the breaks you need and that you’re on the right track.

Here’s to pausing to find your most productive self,

Lisa

Hi Reader Do you ever feel like you’re running around all day just putting out fires? You end the day exhausted, but when you look back, the most important things still aren’t done. That constant cycle of urgency keeps you reacting instead of intentionally choosing what matters. The fix: prioritizing. The reason: if everything is urgent, then nothing is urgent. Without a clear way to prioritize, you’ll always feel behind. When it comes to how to prioritize, there are many ways to decide what...

Hi Reader When you hear the word mindfulness, do you think of sitting perfectly still for 30 minutes, following a guided meditation on an app, or finding total silence (which isn’t exactly realistic in a busy household)? We’re led to believe that a mindfulness practice is this BIG thing, when in reality it’s the little things that bring us present (the little things that are already part of our routine). Mindfulness can happen in the smallest, simplest routines you already have in place, with...

Hi Reader Have you ever felt like the small steps you take toward your goals just aren’t enough? It's understandable when you can't see results right away. Here’s what I’ve learned: it’s the little things we do, day after day, that truly create lasting change. The hardest part is trusting the process. In my latest podcast episode, I dive into the power of small, consistent actions. Inspired by books like The Slight Edge, The Compound Effect, and Atomic Habits, I share how these tiny choices...
