Practice Mindfulness with Your Morning Coffee (No Extra Time Needed)

Hi Reader

When you hear the word mindfulness, do you think of sitting perfectly still for 30 minutes, following a guided meditation on an app, or finding total silence (which isn’t exactly realistic in a busy household)?

We’re led to believe that a mindfulness practice is this BIG thing, when in reality it’s the little things that bring us present (the little things that are already part of our routine).
Mindfulness can happen in the smallest, simplest routines you already have in place, with no extra time required.

Take your morning coffee, for example. Instead of rushing through it, try noticing:

  • The sound of the water brewing. (Or the swish of the instant mix, or another aspect of making it.)
  • The swirl of cream in the cup. (See through cups are great for this.)
  • The warmth of the mug in your hands. (Or the sound of the ice clinking.)
The flavor and texture of each sip. (Yes, this can work for tea and other drinks!)

That’s mindfulness: bringing your attention to the present moment with a lens of acceptance.

It may sound simple, but studies show it’s powerful. By practicing mindfulness, even in these tiny moments, we train the brain to come back to the present, which supports focus, emotional regulation, and even long-term resilience.

And because you don’t need to add anything new, because your existing habits become natural mindfulness anchors, this makes the practice sustainable.

In this week’s episode of the Positively Living® Podcast, I go deeper into this idea of everyday mindfulness: Listen to the episode and/or check out the blog post.

For extra support, I have free resources that fit perfectly with this practice. You may already have one (or both). If so, consider this your reminder to revisit them. If not, click on the links below to access them:

Mindfulness isn’t about perfection. It’s about practice, and the best time to practice is in the moments you’re already living.

Wishing you small, mindful moments that bring you calm and joy,

Lisa

Hi Reader Do you ever feel like you’re running around all day just putting out fires? You end the day exhausted, but when you look back, the most important things still aren’t done. That constant cycle of urgency keeps you reacting instead of intentionally choosing what matters. The fix: prioritizing. The reason: if everything is urgent, then nothing is urgent. Without a clear way to prioritize, you’ll always feel behind. When it comes to how to prioritize, there are many ways to decide what...

Hi Reader Have you ever felt like the small steps you take toward your goals just aren’t enough? It's understandable when you can't see results right away. Here’s what I’ve learned: it’s the little things we do, day after day, that truly create lasting change. The hardest part is trusting the process. In my latest podcast episode, I dive into the power of small, consistent actions. Inspired by books like The Slight Edge, The Compound Effect, and Atomic Habits, I share how these tiny choices...

Hi Reader Change. It’s the one constant in life, and yet, it’s something we naturally resist. Even good changes can feel uncomfortable when the future is uncertain. Over the years, I’ve experienced plenty of change from evolving my podcast, to caregiving for my mom, and the aftermath of surviving a financial upheaval that had us moving across the state with no idea what was next. You can be sure much of it wasn't welcome, but the only way out is through. What I’ve learned is you don’t have to...
