No-cost Self-care Strategies: Lessons from Living with Chronic Illness

Reader

What does self-care mean to you? Here at Positively Productive Systems, we’ve been talking about it for years and we’ve made an important discovery: Self-care is SO MUCH MORE THAN spa days and expensive pampering treatments. While these treatments can be considered self-care, there are other options so much more effective and far less expensive...many that come with NO cost!

If you’re dealing with a chronic illness (or likely know someone else who is) and/or you need better care for whatever reason, I’m glad I caught you today because this conversation is one you don’t want to miss.

In my recent conversation on the podcast with Amber Tresca (an advocate, activist, and person living herself with a chronic illness) we discussed how:

✔️ Self-care is about managing your condition and supporting your future self
✔️ Small, zero-cost actions can make a massive difference
✔️ Your mental health matters just as much as physical health

Amber shared a long list of fantastic ideas that are proven to work and they are worth sharing.

Here are a few of my favorite strategies, which might seem familiar to you:

1. Hydration 💧
Simply drinking a glass of water can reset your entire system.

2. Nature Reset 🌞
Step outside for 5 minutes. Feel the sun, touch the grass, ground yourself.

3. Emotional Detox 🚫
Unfollow social media accounts that drain your energy (aka decluttering)

4. Stretch & Release 🧘‍♀️
Two-minute stretch breaks can transform your physical and mental state.

5. Connect with Others 💕
Reach out to that one friend who always gets you.

Bonus: These strategies aren't just for people with chronic illness - they're for EVERYONE trying to live a more intentional life.

Self-care looks different for everyone. You get to choose what works for you, and you get to change your mind.

Advocating for your wellness is a journey your future self will thank you for and I'm cheering you on,

Lisa

Hi Reader Do you ever feel like you’re running around all day just putting out fires? You end the day exhausted, but when you look back, the most important things still aren’t done. That constant cycle of urgency keeps you reacting instead of intentionally choosing what matters. The fix: prioritizing. The reason: if everything is urgent, then nothing is urgent. Without a clear way to prioritize, you’ll always feel behind. When it comes to how to prioritize, there are many ways to decide what...

Hi Reader When you hear the word mindfulness, do you think of sitting perfectly still for 30 minutes, following a guided meditation on an app, or finding total silence (which isn’t exactly realistic in a busy household)? We’re led to believe that a mindfulness practice is this BIG thing, when in reality it’s the little things that bring us present (the little things that are already part of our routine). Mindfulness can happen in the smallest, simplest routines you already have in place, with...

Hi Reader Have you ever felt like the small steps you take toward your goals just aren’t enough? It's understandable when you can't see results right away. Here’s what I’ve learned: it’s the little things we do, day after day, that truly create lasting change. The hardest part is trusting the process. In my latest podcast episode, I dive into the power of small, consistent actions. Inspired by books like The Slight Edge, The Compound Effect, and Atomic Habits, I share how these tiny choices...
