Why fun isn't the opposite of productive...

Reader

When did fun become something you had to earn?

For most of us, it happened gradually. Work piled up, life got heavier, and somewhere along the way fun got quietly moved to the bottom of the list. It became something to get to later, after the real stuff was handled. And since the real stuff never goes away, later never quite arrives.

Here's what that pattern is actually costing you.

Fun and play aren't a break from productive work. They're an input to it. At the neurochemical level, play triggers dopamine (the brain's reward and motivation chemical) which drives positive emotions, attention, and creativity.

In other words, the enjoyable things aren't getting in the way of your best work. They're what makes it possible.

If you want to start bringing more of this into your life, consider these three approaches:

  1. If you want to reconnect with what's fun for you, consider looking back before you look forward. Think about what you used to do that felt genuinely playful or absorbing — a creative outlet, a hobby, an experience that got quietly edged out by responsibility. That's often your best starting point.
  2. If you want to stop feeling guilty about it, consider reframing play as a productivity input rather than a reward. Rest, replenishment, and creative outlets are direct inputs to your capacity. Fun belongs in that same category. Scheduling it isn't indulgent — it's intentional.
  3. If you want to make it sustainable, consider starting smaller than you think you need to. Ten minutes with a book you love, five minutes of something that makes you laugh — these moments shift your energy in ways that carry forward. The key is protecting that time, because play is almost always the first thing cut when things get busy.

Not sure what actually brings you joy or what's realistic in a short window of time? My free Joy List workbook is a great place to start. It's a short set of prompts that helps you identify what lifts you up and build a personal guide you can return to. If you don't have access to the toolkit, reply to this email and I'll send you the link.

You don't have to overhaul your schedule or wait for a lighter season. You just have to stop treating fun like something you haven't earned yet — because you have, and it was never supposed to work that way.

For me, that means road-tripping with my husband and teens, making music with my family and friends, and inspiring others with my voice. One of my favorite ways to recharge is curling up with a book, an iced coffee, and a cat on my lap. ------------------------------------------- Check out the resources I offer below and request my Toolkit to reduce overwhelm, boost energy, and align your actions with your values!

Reader Does your week need a course catalog? Not literally, but conceptually. Here's what I mean... When you were in school, you didn't wake up and wonder what to focus on first. The structure was handed to you: math, then English, lunch at 11:30, gym on alternating days. It wasn't glamorous, but it was clear. And that clarity removed a surprising amount of daily friction. Our schedules now rarely work that way. Instead, most of us operate from a rolling task list with no built-in rhythm —...

Reader You've set up the routines. You know what you're supposed to do and when. You show up, you go through the steps...and yet the habits you're trying to build keep slipping. The consistency you're looking for stays just out of reach. It's not that your routines are wrong. What's missing is meaning inside the structure you already have. The name for that is ritual. Routine and ritual aren't the same thing, even though we use the words interchangeably. A routine is the sequence of actions...

Reader Have you ever sat down to start your day and immediately felt behind, not because anything new happened, but because yesterday was still waiting for you? It's incredibly frustrating to have to do work before the work. And it's one of the quieter drains on your energy and focus. You haven't even started yet, and you're already tired. The good news: a simple reset habit can change this entirely. It's called Back to Neutral. The idea is straightforward: at the end of your day, you reset...
